OLTMAN, Max John 1925-2003

OLTMAN, CHRISTIANSEN, CULBER, NELL, HOAGLIN

Max John Oltman was born January 14, 1925, in Manly, Iowa, the son of Harm and Christene (Christiansen) Oltman. He graduated from Manly High School in 1943. In January of 1943, he enlisted in the Army Aviation Cadet program and was called to active duty the following July. He graduated from flight school as a pilot in August of 1944 and subsequently served 18 months in New Guinea and the Philippines, during which time he earned, among others, the Philippine Liberation Medal and the Personal Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters. He then spent 32 years in the Army Reserve and the Iowa National Guard, retiring in 1985 as a Master Aviator, with almost 5000 hours of pilot time.

On March 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Beverly Nell Culver in Manly. They lived in Iowa City and Des Moines, and moved to Cedar Falls in 1953. During his time in Cedar Falls, he was employed at Viking Pump, retiring in 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Cedar Falls, four children, Rick of Waterloo, Alan (Selannie) of Minnitrista, MN, Chris (Martha) of Lawrence, KS and Marcie (Mark) of Dellwood, MN; sister, Irene Hoaglin of Hillsboro, IA and beloved nieces and nephews.

Max died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Clark.
