[Waterloo Daily Reporter, Thursday, April 19, 1900, Waterloo, Iowa]

A. G. Thompson, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Cedar Falls, died at his home last night at 7:45 from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy, which affected him about 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon.

Mr. Thompson was engaged in hanging a chandelier at his home when he was seized by an attack which a few hours later caused his death. He was found unconscious and never rallied from the shock. He was a resident of Cedar Falls for many years, and was prominently identified with the life of the city. He was in the hardware business for many years, but retired some time ago. He served the city as alderman and was a school director for a long time. He was prominent in Masonic circles, and at the time of his death was recorder of Baldwin commandery.

The family has been afflicted with another sudden bereavement, which was caused by the death of two daughters, Mary H. and Bertha May, which occurred several years ago. The young ladies were drowned in the Cedar river while in bathing.

Mr. Thompson has been a resident of Cedar Falls since 1863. He was born January 9, 1831, in Cortland County, N. Y. He moved to Tompkins County in 1847 and in 1852 to New York City. In 1856 he came to Chicago, but in the fall of 1857 he returned to New York City, where he remained until July 1872, when he again came to Chicago.

He was married in June, 1867, to Harriet Huntington, who with one son, Harry E. Thompson, are the surviving relatives. Mrs. Thompson is a sister to Mrs. E. Townsend.

Arrangements for the funeral have not been made and cannot be completed until word is received from the son who is attending Cornell College at Ithaca, N. Y.
