Gary Francis Vogel, 70, of Dubuque, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, July 1, 2013, due to complications of cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at The Church of the Resurrection. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friends may also call from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Resurrection Church.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1942 in Waterloo, the third child and oldest son of Francis and Adeline (Holbach) Vogel. He grew up on a farm near Littleton. He attended school at St. Athanasius in Jesup and Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville. On June 21, 1965, he married Doris Schmitz at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raymond. Gary worked for Otis Elevator for 40 years and retired in 2001.

Gary was a member of Resurrection Parish in Dubuque. He was an avid gardener, active volunteer and Operations Board member at the Dubuque Arboretum for many years. He and Doris were able to travel across much of the U.S. He was a great fisherman and passed that on to his sons and grandchildren. With his many skills, Gary was always so willing to help others, be they relatives, friends or strangers, near and far.

Surviving Gary are Doris, his wife of 48 years; son Jeff, wife Lisa, their children Hunter Francis and Evan Reynold of Bernard; son Doug, wife Misty, their children Clio Jessian and Vincent Gary of Findlay, Ill.; his sisters Karen (Loy) McLaughlin of Independence, Diane (Richard) Youngblut of Jesup; brothers Don (Diane) Vogel of Peoria, Ariz.; James (Kathy) and Larry (Linda) both of Jesup; brother-in-law Dean Wienands of Arizona City, Ariz.; also surviving are eleven Schmitz brothers and sisters-in-law.

Preceding Gary in death were his parents and sister, Marlene Wienands.

Memorials in Gary’s honor may be made to the Dubuque Arboretum or the Gary Francis Vogel memorial fund.
