Catherine Ann Livingston died of ovarian cancer at her home in Cedar Falls on Monday, March 6, 2006.

The daughter of Aden B. and Dorothy K. Livingston, Cathy was born in Cedar Falls on July 30, 1948, and lived here for most of her childhood, except for a few years when the family lived in Hampton.

In 1966 she graduated from Cedar Falls High School and attended Colorado Women's College the following year. She transferred to the University of Iowa and received her B. A. in General Studies. After a brief career as a flight attendant with United Airlines, Cathy completed a pre-nursing program at UNI, transferred to the U of I school of nursing, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Cathy worked with diabetic patients at University of Iowa Hospitals and later became head nurse in Radiation Oncology. During this period she was married to Steven Maravetz currently Associate Dean for Communications and Advancement in the U of I College of Medicine. After leaving the University, Cathy served as Geriatric Wellness Coordinator for the Johnson County Visiting Nurses Association. An interest in holistic health led Cathy to Santa Fe, New Mexico and San Diego where she studied Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.

After her father Aden "Bite" Livingston died in 1995, Cathy returned to Cedar Falls to take care of her mother, Dorothy, who resided at the Western Home. She became active in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo community in the areas of environmental, health, and social justice issues.

As a citizen participant, Cathy was a member of the Cedar Falls Board of Adjustment, and the Waterloo Neighborhood Association. She was an elected member of the Black Hawk Soil and Water Commission.
Cathy was a member of the Universalist Unitarian Society of Black Hawk County, The Cedar Falls Kiwanis Club, the Cedar Prairie Sierra Club and the National Audubon Society.

Cathy is survived by her sisters, Susan Livingston Barre (Anthony) of El Dorado Hills, CA, their children, Melissa and Travis Barre and her sister Nancy Norvell Ball of Carbondale, CO; Nancy's children, Jenifer Lindsay (Michael) and their children, Abby and Hayden Reilly; Christopher Ball of Miami, FLA and Benjamin Ball of Los Angeles, CA. Additional survivors are cousins Marie Casey Cook and Donna Casey of Cedar Falls and special friend, Travis Smiley.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 18 at Richardson Funeral Home followed by a celebration of Cathy's life at The Hearst Center for the Arts from 3:00 - 5:00 P.M.
