WATERLOO — William R. “Bill” Porter, of Constantia, N.Y., and Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, June 21, 2013, in Syracuse, N.Y., from the effects of a stroke.

He was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Crawfordsville, son of the Rev. William C. and Elizabeth Murray Porter. He married Marian Jean Shannon on July 31, 1945. She died in 2001.

He graduated from high school in Cedar Rapids in 1943 and then served in the army. He attended Iowa State University, studying engineering. Mr. Porter worked for the Illinois Central Railroad in the engineering department. He also designed the original six-hole golf course in Hudson. He was a member of the Community Church, Hudson.

Survived by his fiancee, Nancy Donigan of Constantia; a sister, Ila Merriam of Pennsylvania; two sons, Joel (Sally) of Wabasha, Minn., and Bruce of Fort Dodge; a daughter, Kim of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Shannon (Shannon) of Winona, Greg of Wabasha, Kristin (Neal) Petersen of Waterloo and Daniel Porter of Northwood; and two great-grandchildren, Micah and Chloe Porter of Winona.

Preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rosana; his parents; four sisters, Flora, Mary, Mildred and Etta Mae; and two brothers, James and David.

Celebration of life service: 1 p.m. Saturday at Community Church, Hudson, preceded by an hour of visitation.

Bill will be remembered for his humor, love of music, twinkle in his Irish eyes, ability to get things done right and the great love of family and friends. A life well lived.
