WATERLOO — Donald P. Abben, 81, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Allen Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 22, 1931, in Hudson, son of Richard and Malinda Louise Degner Abben. He married Elsie Richardson and the couple later divorced. He married Ferne Violet Harris on Aug. 29, 1968, in Des Moines.

Mr. Abben attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology for machinist training. He worked in several field during his lifetime including farming, Hawkeye Steel and John Deere. He later owned and operated Post Office Vending Co., Waterloo, until his retirement. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, the National Federation of the Blind and a was former member of the Gutter Sweepers bowling league.

Survived by his wife of Waterloo; a son, Dirk (Barb) of Janesville; a daughter, Sabrina Jackson of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, Trinity (Audrey), Shane, Katrina, Denise, Malinda, Zackary (Andrea), Robert, Trisha and Samantha; four great-grandchildren, Makinzie, Eli, Laikyn and John; two sisters, Shirley (Clifford) Schilling of Ionia and Karen (Gary) Flemming of La Porte City; a brother-in-law, Don Pierce of Waterloo; and two former daughters-in-law, Geneva Abben and Karen Abben.

Preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Shane Abben; a sister, Darlene Pierce; and two brothers, Vern and Cecil Abben.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Garden View Chapel and for an hour before services Tuesday at the Church.
