[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Sunday, June 16, 2013]

Glenyce Butschy died peacefully on June 13, 2013, at Allen Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Family members and friends gathered with her during the last days of her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, William and Meta Judas, sister Frances Hummel, daughter-in-law Carol Butschy, and her former husband, Robert Butschy, whom she married June 21, 1952.

She was born July 21, 1927, in Readlyn, Iowa. She grew up in New Hampton and Cedar Falls. She received her elementary school teaching degrees, and later a master’s degree in Elementary School Guidance and Counseling, all from the University of Northern Iowa. She taught elementary school for 45 years, primarily in the Waterloo Schools. She loved teaching children, and used her imagination to make learning fun.

She is survived by daughter Lynne (Michael) Lent and grandsons Thomas, Aaron and Daniel Lent, all of St. Louis Park, Minn., son Ross Butschy of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and granddaughter Michelle (Pete) Gallery and great-grandchildren Aidan and Emilee Gallery of Atkins, Iowa. She also leaves other family members, many friends and her beloved canine companion Kody, a miniature Schnauzer.

Glenyce had many interests including golfing, bowling, bridge, cross word puzzles, and was the go to person for spelling and word usage and a nearly unbeatable scrabble player. She was a talented photographer and loved traveling throughout the United States and abroad. She loved spending time with her family and was a proud and playful parent and grandparent known for her storytelling.

She was a long time member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Black Hawk County and the American Association of University of Women. Following her retirement, she did volunteer teaching, working at the Sartori Hosptial and World’s Window gift shops. She also volunteered with the Cedar Falls Women’s Club. She was proudest of her work in the Pet Pals program; taking her Schnauzers to visit residents of local nursing homes.

Glenyce spent the last years of her life within the Western Home Community where she was a friend to many. The staff became an extended family providing tender loving care. We wish to thank the staff of Allen Hospital for their sensitive care and support; providing comfort in the final days of her life. We give a special thanks to Sally Linhart and July Knudsen and to her many friends who provided help and support.

We will miss her wonderful humor, caring and generous spirit, her brilliant smile, beautiful eyes and gentle hands. Because of her life, Glenyce left the world a better place. We loved her beyond what words can tell. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service celebrating Glenyce’s life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Black Hawk County on Friday, June 21 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Animal Humane Society or the donor’s choice

Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
