WATERLOO — Ralph Ernest Schwab, 83, of Gallatin Gateway, Mont., formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, June 13, 2013.

He was born March 24, 1930, in Waterloo, son of John and Erna Busch Schwab. He married Ellen Oesterle on May 7, 1955.

He grew up in Waterloo, and served in the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1968. After his retirement from the army, he then served as a postal carrier for the U.S. Post Office for 22 years in Davis, Calif., retiring in 1986. He moved to Montana in 1989.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Kathleen (Greg) Bolton of Woodland, Calif.; and a sister, Helga (Larry) Beard; and many nieces and nephews;

Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Gilbert.

Memorial services will be held in Waterloo at a later date. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fort Harrison National Cemetery, Helena, Mont.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Salvation Army or to the Hub City Humane Society, 95 Jackson Road, Hattiesburg, MS 39402.

Ralph loved the mountains, was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman and enjoyed cutting firewood for the wood stove. He was an avid reader and history buff with an amazing gift of recall.
