Richard T. Connell, 90, of Waterloo died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at Covenant Hospital as the result of a stroke.

He was born October 4, 1917, in Conrad, Iowa, son of Thomas E. and Margaret L. O'Connor Connell.

He married Eleanor L. Gindt Jan. 20, 1940 at St. Johns Catholic Church, Waterloo. Richard grew up in rural Grundy County and was a graduate of Our Lady of Victory Academy High School in Waterloo. He was a member of the Waterloo Police Department from 1943 to 1974, retiring with the rank of Captain. He was a security guard at the then National Bank of Waterloo for about ten years. Dick was a sports fan with a lifelong love of baseball. He participated in several sports and was a fine bowler and an avid golfer, achieving three holes in one. He was both a hunter and fisherman and handcrafted many fishing rods and lures. Along with Eleanor, he took particular pride in wood finishing and the upkeep of their home and yard. He enjoyed keeping in touch with his cousin Sister Antoine Murphy at St. Marys Convent in Rochester, Minn. Dick was proud of his Irish ancestry and Catholic faith.

Survivors include three sons: Michael (Jackie) of Mission, Texas, Robert (Linda) of Waterloo, and Charles (Terri) of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; eight grandchildren: Laurie (Marty) Fleuette of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; Dan (Lisa) Connell of Davenport, Brian (Terri) Connell of Charlotte, N.C., Brenda (Brian) Gorman of Dallastown, Pa., Julie (Kevin) Guse of Janesville, Minn., Cindy (Greg) Pink of Surprise, Ariz., Chad (Vicki) Connell of Buckeye, Ariz., and Valerie Connell of Ames; 15 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; 29 nieces and 15 nephews, the children of his sisters and brothers Eunice and Johnny Kehoe, Joe and Kay Connell, Jerry and Marcella Connell, Russ and Dotti Connell, Ramona and Berwyn Wood, Ruth Anne Holzgrove, Rose Marie Price, and Gen and Glen Johnson and Eleanors nephew David (Judi) Halbmaier.

Preceded in death by his father in 1966; his mother in 1977; his eight brothers and sisters: Jerome in 1969, Ramona in 1991, Ruth Anne in 1991, Russell in 2002, Joseph in 2003, Eunice in 2003, Genevieve in 2004, and Rose Marie in 2005; and his wife Eleanor, Oct. 31 2007.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway 233-3393 with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 6:30 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
