CEDAR FALLS — The Rev. Theodore Maakestad, 102, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at NewAldaya Lifescapes, Cedar Falls.

He was born Oct. 25, 1910, in Radcliffe, son of William and Martha Okland Maakestad. He married Tavia Bjerkestrand on Aug. 23, 1940, in Radcliffe. She died July 5, 2001.

He graduated from Radcliffe High School, St. Olaf College and Luther Seminary. He was a minister for 50 years, serving congregations in Ottawa, Ill., Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, St. Paul, Minn., Teaneck, N.J., Estherville, Brooklyn, N.Y., Thunder Bay Ontario, and most recently as Pastor of Evangelism at Nazareth Lutheran Church from 1976 to 1989.

Survived by two daughters, Martha (Ray) Bailey of Fort Collins, Colo., and Margit (the Rev. Ben) Coltvet of Upper LaHave, Nova Scotia, Canada; seven grandchildren: Nathan (Beth) Coltvet, Sarah (David) DeVan, Benjamin Theodore (Joy McDonald) Coltvet, Rachel (Nels) Kristenson, Deborah (Ben J.) Klemme, Angela (Jeff) Nasstrom and Josh Bailey; and 18 great-grandchildren: Adam, Marikka, Sophia and Isaac Coltvet, Thomas, Eleanor and Henry Devan, Dinkenesh and Abenet Coltvet, Taus, Siri Tavia, and Jens Theodore Kristenson, Simon and Winston Klemme, Lauren, Erica, Carson and Bailey Nasstrom.

Preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mary Maakestad, five brothers, John, Harry, Leonard, Wilbur and Arnold; and eight sisters, Ella Hovelsrude, Josie Frankenburger, Marie Berve, Emma Smith, Elma Schwartz, Margaret Maakestad, Verdelle Hoth and Esther Stensland.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, June 10, at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial in Radcliffe Cemetery, Radcliffe. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to NewAldaya Lifescapes, the church or a charity of donor’s choice.
