James was born on February 11, 1939, in Sumner, Iowa, the son of Donald Esmond and Inez Marie (Ehleri) McCue.

He married Shirley Riggle in May 1965, and they later divorced. James was then was united in marriage to Susan A. Broad on November 11, 1993 in Cedar Falls.

James served in the United States Army. He retired from the IAARNG on Feb. 11, 1999, as the HHC 1st BN 133rd INF CO 1SG-E8. Combined with active duty in the 82nd Airborne and IAARNG, James had a total of 33 years service. He was later employed with Friendship Village as a wheel chair van driver for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife, Susan of Waterloo, Iowa; a son, Patrick J. McCue of Seattle, WA; a daughter, Amy J. McCue of Waterloo; a brother, Michael (Judy) McCue of St. Louis, MO; three sisters: Kay Vance of Waterloo, Beth (Roger) Phillips of Decorah, IA and Susan (Jake) Jacobson of Benton, TN; three step daughters: Colleen (Rich) Wrage of Boone, IA, Colette (William Johnston) of Stanhope, IA and Lorelei Buechler (Jim Cameron) also of Boone; eight grandchildren: Megan McCue, Alex and Tanner Deppe, all of Waterloo, Emily and Holly Wrage of Boone and Nathan, Matthew and Melinda Johnston of Stanhope; and a brother-in-law, Cliff Adams of Cedar Falls, IA.

James died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Cathy Adams.
