WATERLOO — Esther Anna Holtzman, 95, of Waterloo, died Monday, May 27, 2013, at Affinity House, Waterloo.

She was born Nov. 21, 1917, in Arlington, daughter of John and Lura Hoisington Swales. She married Jesse Holtzman June 18, 1938, in rural Arlington. He died in May 1993.

Mrs. Holtzman graduated from Stanley Country School, went to Huntington College in Indiana for a year and received her bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University and a master’s degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa. She taught for many years in Maynard, Arlington, Hawkeye, Sumner and retired from Independence. She and her husband farmed in Fayette County and in rural Westgate and were the first farmers to introduce Finn sheep to Iowa.

Survived by her grandchildren, Tamie (Dr. Jerry) Stahl, Dean (Wendy) Richardson, Darrell (Donna) Richardson, Kristy (Jeff) Cain and Daivd (Jodi) Richardson; great-grandchildren, Dr. Brooke (Jason) Wiener, Britania (Brent) Perkins, Breanna (Chris) Brecher, MacKenzie Cain, Courtney Richardson, Somer (Edgar) Ruiz and Dylan Richardson; great-great-grandchildren, Cydnie, Paisy, Austin, Paige, Nolan, Maci, Christopher, Tomas and another expected, Baby Brecher; two sisters, Marjorie Cass and Marian Terrell; and a son-in-law, Ed Marker.

Preceded in death by a sister, Ruth; a brother, Earl; a daughter, Eleanor; a grandson, Deland; a great-grandson, Jeremy; and an ex-son-in-law, Leland Richardson.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Crossroads Community Church of the Nazarene, with burial in Fayette Cemetery, Fayette. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo.

Esther was a devout Republican and worked extensively to support the party. She enjoyed sewing, was an avid reader and writer, and was up to date on all current events.
