Vinod Kumar Sarin, 70, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, in Iowa City, IA, on May 26, 2013, from complications following an earlier stroke.

Vinod is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pramod Sarin, son Dr. Salaish Sarin and his wife, Shweta, and their two beloved children, Simran and Sanjeev; daughter Shelly Nicholson and her husband, Keith; and daughter, Dr. Ritu Sarin. He is also survived by his younger brothers Subash, Narinder, and Ramesh Sarin, and younger sister Asha Khanna.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ram L. and Sushila Sarin.

Born in Mussoorie, India on March 15, 1943, Vinod graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the IIT Roorkee University, and a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from the Delhi School of Planning. He started his career as an Assistant Planner and Architectural Advisor to the State Government of Rajasthan. He worked on urbanization projects related to canal development for the Bikaner area for a United Nations and World Bank project.

In 1970, Vinod and Pramod immigrated to the United States and settled in the Cedar Valley. Vinod worked as an Assistant Architect for Johnson Jamerson Associates in Cedar Falls and then in 1971 worked as a planner for the Metro Planning Commission. In 1975, he joined the Iowa Northland Regional Council of Governments, as the Director of Regional Planning and Housing from 1975 to 1983. In 1986, Vinod served as the City Coordinator for Wells, Minnesota.

As an architect and regional planner, Vinod’s work focused on housing and environmental planning. He was especially interested in the needs of the elderly and underprivileged, securing grants for community projects from HUD and local agencies.

Vinod was a charter member of the Iowa Chapter of the American Institute of Certified Planners, a former member of the Waterloo Rotary Club, a Charter Member and member of the Board of Directors for the India Association of NE Iowa. He also served as a member of the Executive Committee overseeing the Hindu Temple of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Vinod will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his love of tennis and hiking, and that he was always fond of a good laugh.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Vinod Sarin to the Iowa City Mercy Hospice Program by contacting the Mercy Hospital Foundation at (319) 358-2622 or the UIHC Kidney Transplant and Research Fund by contacting the University of Iowa Foundation.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at the Rotary Reserve Lodge, 5932 North Union Rd, Cedar Falls, Iowa at 4:30 p.m.
