WATERLOO - Gwendolyn C. "Gwen" Smith, 62, of Waterloo, formerly of Oklahoma City, Okla., died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at her home of natural causes.

She was born Sept. 1, 1943, in Oklahoma City, daughter of Charles E. and Ethel M. Wilson Johnson. She married Aubrey C. Smith on Feb. 1, 1963, in Oklahoma City. They later divorced in 1989.

She graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and public administration. She worked for the Waterloo Public Library for 28 years, retiring as circulation manager in November 2003. Her love of books was legendary. She also practiced numerous arts and crafts.

Survived by her mother, Ethel Johnson of Waterloo; a brother, Charles Johnson of Waterloo; a sister, Carol L. Garroute of Garland, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her father, Charles E. Johnson.

Memorial services will take place at a later date. Her body has been cremated.
