WATERLOO - Valentine "Val" Peter Hilby, 72, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at Allen Hospital following complications of heart surgery.

He was born June 30, 1935, in La Crosse, Wis., son of Valentine L. and Anna Elizabeth Meier Hilby. He married Mary Ann Kaiser Feb. 11, 1956, in La Crosse.

Mr. Hilby graduated from Aquinas High School in La Crosse. He was employed in Methods Set Up at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 35 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Knights Of Columbus and assisted in bartending there.

Survived by his wife; a son, Dan (Sue) of Cedar Rapids; a son-in-law, Bob (Carolyn) Nelson of New York; three daughters: Sherry (Dan) Etringer and Kathy (Richard Dean) Hilby, both of Waterloo and Denise (Mike) Harrison of Reinbeck; 10 grandchildren: Hollie Belthuis, Andrea, Alyssa and Misty Hilby, Molly Mummelthie, Trevor Harrison, Alexandria and Samantha Etringer and Nick and Kasey Nelson; two great-grandchildren, Trystin and Jenna Belthuis; five brothers: Ronald (Jo) of Georgia, George (Joanne) of Jefferson, Wis., Walter (Mae) of Springfield, Ill., David (Polly) of Coon Valley, Wis., and Kenneth (Nancy) of Onalaska, Wis.; and two sisters, Mary (Paul) Weiner of Green Bay, Wis., and Irene (Wayne) Weinzirl of Greenwood, Mo.

Preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Laurie Nelson; and a sister, Alice Hilby.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service, and at the church for an hour before services on Saturday.
