ROCHESTER, Minn., May 9.—Judge Charles W. Mullan of Waterloo, Iowa, state's attorney from 1902 to 1908, died at a hospital here while being operated upon for a cancer. The body, accompanied by his own son, Charles H. Mullan, will be sent to Waterloo for burial. Judge Mullan was a pioneer of Black Hawk County, and in addition holding state's attorney's office he served as county attorney, state senator and district judge a number of years.

Hon. Charles W. Mullan, Attorney General of the State of Iowa, and an esteemed resident of Waterloo, was born in Wayne County, Illinois, December 21, 1845, and came with his people to Iowa when six months old. He was reared in Iowa, receiving his education in the public schools of Waterloo and in Upper Iowa University, at Fayette.

He enlisted as a private in the 47th Iowa Regiment in 1864 and served until that regiment was mustered out. He read law under Judge Orrin Miller and was admitted to the bar in 1870. His career in law and later in politics has been a notable one. He has been active as a member of the Republican party. He was a solicitor of the city of Waterloo for six years, and was elected county attorney and served in that position six years more. In 1897 he was elected State Senator from the 18 Senatorial District of Iowa and served in the 27th and 28th General Assemblies. He resigned the office of State Senator in 1900 and was the same year elected Attorney General of Iowa, in which he is now serving his second term.

Mr. Mullan is a Knight Templar, 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner and member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

In 1870 Mr. Mullan married Emma L. Hammond, daughter of William Hammond, and he has four children: Charles H., Frances G., Alice M. and Alfred W. He has lived in Waterloo all his life.
