Wilbert James Meinhart, 86, of Traer, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at Sunrise Hill Terrace Apartments of natural causes.

He was born Sept. 27, 1921, west of Clutier, son of Mike and Libbie Hach Meinhart. He married Lillian Prusha on June 4, 1946, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama.

Mr. Meinhart graduated from Hudson High School in 1939. He farmed with his parents and followed the harvest through the Red River Valley in North Dakota, threshing wheat, oats, barley and flax, and then worked at the Hudson Creamery. He retied from farming in 1983. He was actively involved in the Hampshire Association, serving as president for many years, and was awarded the first Purebred Master Seedstock Producer award. He raised many state and national champion Hampshires.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kathy (John) Weber of Dysart; a son, Myron (Angie) of Hudson; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Brian (Deb) Weber, Belle and Alexa of Dysart, Jennifer (Casey) Dreiling, Brooklyn and Aidan of Lenexa, Kan., Christina Weber of San Francisco, Brad (Wendy) Weber of Mankato, Minn., Jeremy (Jen) Ludwig and Oscar of Eugene, Ore., Missy (Gary) Chamberlain and Jersey of Tacoma, Wash., Jason (Sabrina) Ludwig, Isabella and Vincent of Cedar Falls, and Mitch Meinhart of Evansdale.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Catholic Church, with burial in Blessing Cemetery, rural Hudson. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Overton Funeral Home, Traer, with a 5 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service.

Memorials will be used to establish an agriculture scholarship in memory of Wilbert Meinhart at Hudson Community Schools.
