Maurice was born December 1, 1924 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the son of Martin and Ann Johnson. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1942 and joined the Army right after graduation. Maurice served in North Africa and in China during World War II and was a decorated soldier. Maurice also served in the Navy during the Korean War where he was stationed in London, England.

In 1947, Maurice met and in the following year, married Sheryl Hutson in Hayfield, Iowa on July 3, 1948. Maurice and Sheryl had three children, Linda (and Steve) Struyk of St. Charles, Missouri, Dan (and Rose) Johnson of West Chicago, Illinois and Mike (and Kathy) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They have 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Maurice worked for Peoples Finance Company for 46 years in their offices throughout Iowa but spent the last several years in the office in Waterloo as the Vice President of the company. Sheryl worked along side Maurice for many years in the Waterloo before both retiring in December, 1999.
Maurice was an avid stamp collector and had pen pals all over the world who would trade stamps back and forth for many years. He also enjoyed reading books and amassed a very large personal library. He was a lifelong learner, attending Morningside College in Sioux City, Drake University in Des Moines, the University of Iowa and, later, attended the University of Northern Iowa. Maurice very much enjoyed following his children and then his grand children through all of their numerous activities. Maurice and Sheryl were very active in the swimming club in Cedar Falls and numerous other organizations. After retirement, they were very active in the Senior Center in Cedar Falls and in the Fall of 2002, he received recognition from the Department of Elder Affairs for the volunteer work at the Senior Center.

Maurice was loved very much by his family and, prior to his death, was able to attend an early family Christmas in which all of the family was able to attend.
