David “Dave” Seltzer, 82, of Maplewood, Minn., formerly of Waterloo, was born Sept. 4, 1930, in Minneapolis, the son of Joseph and Beatrice (Robitshek) Seltzer. He received a BA in history from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., and an MA in journalism and constitutional law from the University of Minnesota. He worked summers at newspapers in Red Wing and Clinton. Dave was united in marriage to Anne Crozier at her home in Clinton on Nov. 17, 1956. Dave joined the Waterloo Daily Courier in 1954 and was the first Courier employee to have an MA. In 1957, he was the first Courier employee to win the Associated Press Newswriting Sweepstakes award for his story on the shooting death of Waterloo Police Officer William Melhorn.
He worked all newswriting beats at the Courier. He became wire editor in 1958, and in April 1961 he was elected President of Iowa Associated Press Telegraph Editors Association. Cy Douglass, longtime AP chief, called Dave “the most intelligent newsman he had ever met.” Dave earned numerous Associated Press awards for his page one designs.
Dave served as editorial assistant and became the Courier’s editorial page editor and chief editorial writer. In 1973 his editorial won the American Legion’s Best for “In the interest of Youth.” In May 1975, the United States Industrial Council cited his editorial “Does it matter that Big Brother killed a foundry,” the story of Headford Bros. and Hutchins Foundry’s death because of OSHA rules. In November 1979 he received another United States Industrial Council award for his editorial “Must Scenario’s Last Act Kill US Private Business?”
He left the Courier when it became part of a chain newspaper group. He worked for the JTPA agency for several years, leaving following a heart attack.
Dave became a volunteer at Allen Memorial Hospital. In September 1988 he received one of the Mayors’ Volunteer Awards for his volunteering at Allen. Dave became Guest Relations Consultant at Allen. He retired from Allen in 1995. In 2001, Dave was honored as Volunteer of the Year by the Family YMCA of Black Hawk County.
Dave passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013, at his home. He is preceded in death by his parents. Dave is survived by his wife, Anne; a daughter, Barbara (Daniel) Tako of Stillwater, Minn.; and two granddaughters, Emily and Sarah Tako.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, at the Katharine Pahl Chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery, with burial to follow. Visitation will be from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery. Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo, 232-3235, is in charge of arrangements.
