WATERLOO — Henry H. Zeien, 97, of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born June 14, 1915, in New Hampton, son of Thomas and Mary Ann Pierre Zeien. He married Lottie May Stevens on Oct. 16, 1948, in Waterloo. She died March 25, 1996.

Mr. Zeien was in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was owner and operator of Zeien Excavating, retiring in 1979.

Survived by five sons: Henry John (Janet) of La Porte City, David M. (Nancy) of Cedar Falls, Peter R. (Charis) of Popular Bluff, Mo., Allan J. of La Porte City and Andrew T. of Little Rock, Ark.; three daughters: Virginia M. (Charles) Harp of Waterloo, Caroline M. (Mike Sinn) Zeien of La Porte City and Jacklynne M. (Scott ) Snyder of Clutier; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph of La Porte City; and three sisters: Theresa Kapler of Waterloo, Loretta Courtney of Ottumwa and Barbara Nathanson of St. Paul, Minn.

Preceded in death by a son, Vernon; a granddaughter, Rebbecca Drewelow; and a brother, Ralph Zeien.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Thursday at the church. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19, Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice Home.
