TWO DEAD IN WATERLOO SHOOTING

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- Two people were shot to death as they drove through a residential neighborhood Friday morning, police said.

Anissa Schroeder, 18, and Ronald Scullark Jr., 28, were found covered in blood after their sport utility vehicle crashed into a fence outside a home. No one has been arrested and no suspects have been named, police said.

Dozens of onlookers gathered at the scene, including a few witnesses who told police they saw a man running from the vehicle toward some nearby apartments. Drops of blood were found on the street, leaving a trail to where the vehicle stopped.

"I don't understand what's going on," said Sharnisha Todd, Schroeder's friend. "I don't know who'd want to do this to her. She didn't do nothing to nobody."

Tammy Jones, Schroeder's mother, said her daughter had been friends with Scullark for several months.

Jennine Breyfogle was the first to the scene. She said she heard her dogs barking, saw the vehicle in her yard and called 911. She said she saw two people unresponsive in the vehicle and the back door to the SUV was open.

"I looked at them and saw blood on their faces," she said.

Police said autopsies will be performed.

WATERLOO, IOWA - Authorities have charged him with two counts of first degree murder. The suspect is Martaves Keys, 25, of Waterloo.

Police say he's the person who killed Anissa Schroeder, 18, and Ronald Scullark, 28, last week. Both died from single gunshot wounds to the head while sitting in an SUV.

The sports utility vehicle with the victims crashed into the fence here on West Donald Street. Waterloo police say witnesses saw the suspect jump out of the back seat and run away.

Investigators did not have to go far to arrest Martaves Keys on the murder charges. Police arrested him on Monday for a weapons violation so he was already in jail. Investigators say he confessed and gave them directions to a weapon.

"We did recover a firearm we believe may be involved in this. Further ballistics examination will determine if it was the weapon used," said Capt. Bruce Arends, Waterloo Police Department.

Waterloo police would not explain the reason for the shooting that took place in the middle of the day. Victim's Scullark and Schroeder were in the front seat when they were shot. Cards and mementos mark the spot on a residential street now. One neighbor says an arrest is good news.

"I have not talked to the other neighbors since this happened. I don't know what their thoughts are. My wife and I though are thankful for the news," said Pat Kane, neighbor.

Although there is no talk of a motive yet, police do say the victim's and the suspect knew each other. One of Anissa Schroeder's friends attending her funeral called the arrest welcomed news.

"Yeah, I'm glad their working and doing their job."

In court, keys' bond was set at $2 million. The next court appearance is tentatively set for November 16th.

Court documents say Keys told police he threw away both the bloody clothing and the weapon. Police did recover the handgun where Keys told them they'd find it.
