Cedar Falls - Raymond H. Smith, 100, died Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the Western Home Communities Martin Center.

He was born May 10, 1909 on a farm near Lamoni, IA, the son of Arthur H. and Georgia (Horner) Smith. He married Verna Garver on September 9, 1934, at her home in Lamoni. Raymond graduated from Lamoni High school in 1926, and Iowa State University in 1931. He worked as an accountant for 30 years at Walker Remedy Company in Waterloo. He was then office manager for Cardinal Construction Company in Waterloo, for fourteen years.

Over his lifetime, Raymond was devoted to his family, faith, education and community. He was a charter member of St. Timothys United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls, and Lay Leader for several years. After retirement Raymond was a volunteer for six years at Southdale Elementary School and was honored as Friend of Education by the Cedar Falls Education Association in 1998.

Raymond is survived by a son, John (Mary) Smith of Elk Grove Villiage, IL; two daughters, Barbara (Don) Breshears of Lamoni, IA., and Beverly (Bob) Bechtel of Tucson, AZ; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and a sister, Gracia (Larry) Herbert of Bolivar, MO. Raymond was preceded in death by his wife.

A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Timothys United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will occur at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, IA. The family will greet friends at St. Timothys United Methodist Church 3220 Terrace Dr., Cedar Falls, on Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the church or Western Home Communities. Richardson Funeral Home assisted the family.
