CONNELL, GINDT, KAUMANNS, HALBMAIER

Eleanor L. Connell, 88, of Waterloo died Wednesday Oct. 31, 2007, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of natural causes.

She was born March 19, 1919 in Waterloo daughter of Leo P. and Sybilla C. Kaumanns Gindt. She married Richard T. Connell on Jan. 20 1940 at St. Johns Catholic Church in Waterloo. Her mother immigrated to the United States from Germany passing through Ellis Island during its initial year of operation in 1892. Eleanor treasured various items crafted by her father a very fine carpenter/cabinet-maker. She started school at St. Johns Catholic Grade School when it opened in 1924. Her first teacher was Sister Mary Ursula who became Principal for her sons years there and who remained a lifelong friend. Eleanor played the organ at church as a girl and loved music all her life. She graduated from Our Lady of Victory Academy high school. She volunteered many years at Covenant Hospital. Her family was her greatest joy and she kept an immaculate home providing a warm welcome for them always.

Survivors include her husband; three sons: Michael (Jackie) of Mission, TX, Robert (Linda) of Waterloo, and Charles (Terri) of Prairie du Chien, WI; eight grandchildren: Laurie (Marty) Fleuette of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Dan (Lisa) Connell of Davenport, Brian (Terri) Connell of Charlotte, NC, Brenda (Brian) Gorman of Dallastown, PA, Julie (Kevin) Guse of Janesville, MN, Cindy (Greg) Pink of Surprise, AZ, Chad (Vicki) Connell of Buckeye, AZ, and Valerie Connell of Ames; 15 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; and a nephew David (Judi) Halbmaier of Washburn.

Preceded in death by her father in 1961, her mother in 1962, a brother Roy in childhood, and a sister Dorothy.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway 233-3393, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
