WATERLOO — Dorothy E. King Brown, 90, of Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, formerly of Friendship Village, died Monday, March 21, 2005, at the care center of natural causes.
She was born Feb. 24, 1915, in Black Hawk County, Mount Vernon Township, daughter of William and Myrtie Weber King. She married Harry G. Brown Aug. 19, 1946, in Waterloo. He died April 9, 1994.
Mrs. Brown graduated from Dunkerton High School and Iowa State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and later attended Iowa State University. She worked as an extension food preservation assistant during the summers of 1944 through 1945, taught at Dunkerton High School from 1930 to 1949, was principal in 1945 and then taught economics at the West High School, Waterloo, from 1950 to 1979.
She was a member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, Black Hawk County Retired Teachers Association and Daughters of the American Revolution. She lived on the Century Family Farm until retiring to Friendship Village in 1993.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Helen Groothuis of Hudson; a brother-in-law, Harold Brown of New York City; a nephew, Dr. Glen (Marilyn) Groothuis of Hudson; a niece, Lois (Steve) Lamb of Grants Pass, Ore.; a niece-in-law, Peggy Groothuis of Willmar, Minn.; many great-nieces and nephews; and many great-great-nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by a nephew, Ivan Groothuis.
Services: 10:30 am. today at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, with burial at 1:30 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to Walnut Ridge Baptist Academy or the Harry and Dorothy Brown Walnut Ridge Baptist Academy Scholarship Fund.
