Fundraiser planned for sick C.F. baby

CEDAR FALLS - With those big baby blue eyes, Carver McFarlane looks like every parent's dream.

But at just 10 months, the constant chatter and chewing most parents swoon over are difficult daily victories in a never-ending nightmare as the Cedar Falls infant fights for his life.

At first glance, McFarlane appears to be a typical healthy, happy infant. It wasn't long before his parents, Stacy and Dawn McFarlane, saw red flags and knew something wasn't right with their newborn. In November, three months after birth, the McFarlane's began noticing the infant spitting up a lot. He wasn't gaining weight, and his muscle tone was low, so doctors investigated the possibility of acid reflux disease. By December, Carver was admitted to the hospital for dehydration and eventually released.

A few months passed without any incidents, but the McFarlane's weren't in the clear yet. On March 12, the infant was vomiting, unable to keep any food down, and his bowels were failing. He was taken to Covenant Medical Center, then transported to Iowa City where he went into cardiac arrest. During the weeks that followed, Carver was placed on a feeding tube and developed cellulitis in his leg. Antibiotics were administered through an IV, but due to the vast amount of different medicines he is taking, doctors believe his body has become immune to many of the antibiotics, and an infection was able to spread to the bone.

After returning home for only a couple of hours on June 16, Carver went into cardiac arrest for the second time and was rushed to Iowa City. Since then, doctors have conducted numerous tests and studies in hopes of diagnosing the illness. Most test results can take up to four weeks to receive, but many specialists agree that based on what systems have failed and in what order, Carver is most likely suffering from a mitochondrial disease.

These types of diseases, which center around the body's cells, can affect the brain, nerves, muscles, kidneys, heart, liver, eyes, ears or pancreas. It is most often a genetic disease that affects about 1,000 to 4,000 newborns each year in the United States, ranging in severity from mild to fatal.

Dawn spends most hours awake at Carver's bedside, while her husband, Stacy, continues to work between hospital visits. The big brothers, Madden, 3 and Jarrett, 10, have taken on extra duties around the house. Both boys will be tested once they turn 18 to see if they are carriers of the genetic disease.

For the time being, family and friends are doing everything they can to blanket the McFarlanes with love and support. Carver's child-care provider, Michele Wetzel, has set up an account with Veridian Credit Union under "The Carver McFarlane Fund." Money from the fund will go toward bills, gas money and any expenses not covered by insurance. Neither parent is receiving paid leave from work, so Wetzel encourages any financial support.

"They're just a wonderful family," Wetzel said. "It's just sad to see this happen to a baby. It's horrible to watch him go through this."

Dawn's supervisor, Tamara DeMaris, will be holding a fundraiser on Aug. 13 at the Electric Park Ballroom in Waterloo from 1 to 5 p.m. The event is open to the public and includes live music, beer and food with paid admission. There will also be an auction of miscellaneous items to help raise money.
