Myrtle L. Fitkin was born November 28, 1916, in Dawson, North Dakota, the daughter of Vassilli and Maria (Lazaroff) Balaban. She moved with her family to Plainfield, Iowa in 1934. She later lived in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area where she worked for Rath Packing Company for 18 years. Myrtle was united in marriage to Karl B. Fitkin on April 16, 1951, in Waterloo, Iowa. Following Karl's retirement the couple lived in Otter Tail Lake, Minnesota. She enjoyed fishing and traveling to visit her relatives and always enjoyed their visits to her. She was very interested in and greatly enjoyed her many nieces and nephews. Following Karl's death, February 22, 1985, she moved back to the Cedar Falls Area, residing the past five years at Mallard Point.

Myrtle is survived by her sister, Anna (Ben) Kinev of Steele, North Dakota; two step sisters, Minnie Makedonsky of Steele, and Doris Zekoff of St. Paul, Minnesota; two step sisters-in-law, Hilda Kalainoff of Denver, Iowa, and Jennie Kalainoff of Steele; two step brothers-in-law, John Kalainoff of Denver, and James Kalainoff of Des Moines, Iowa.

Myrtle died Friday, August 19, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; 2 brothers, Steve and James Balaban; two sisters, Christine and Marian Makedonsky; two step-brothers, George and Matt Kalainoff; and a sister, Ethel Keiderling.
