Cedar Falls - Patrick O'Connor Shields, 76, died at his home Friday, April 10, 2009.

He was born November 27, 1932, in Dunlap, IA., the son of Patrick J. and Mary B. (O'Connor) Shields. Mr. Shields was united in marriage to Patricia A. Troy on April 12, 1958, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls, IA.

He was employed by John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works as a Divisional Superintendant retiring after 35 years. He had served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict, was Past Grand Knight of The Knights of Columbus in Cedar Falls, and was an active volunteer over the years in the community.

He is survived by his wife of Cedar Falls; three daughters: Teresa L. (Joel) Gersema of Cedar Falls, Leah E. (Steve) Madsen of Marshalltown, IA, and Sara E. (Phillip) Ruhlmann of Cedar Rapids, IA; one son, Patrick J. (Lisa) Shields of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren: Troy Gersema, Beth Gersema, Jacob Madsen, Benjamin Madsen, Luke Madsen, Madison Ruhlmann, and Ella Shields; two sisters, Margaret Grady of Woodbine, IA., and Lois Rannells of Cedar Falls, IA.

Mr. Shields was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Millicent Johnston, and a nephew, Tom Grady.

Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will be in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens with Full Military Honors by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49. Friends may call at the Richardson Funeral Home on Tuesday, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary following.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the family.
