Henry C. Matthias, 83, of 114 Berkshire Rd., one of the founders of the business now known as the Waterloo Dredging Company, died of a stroke at Allen Memorial Hospital at 7:25 a.m. Monday [October 20, 1952].

In 1909 Mr. Matthias, in partnership with Gustav Kretzschmar, founded the Kretzschmar and Matthias Cement Block Co.

The partnership was dissolved in 1919 and he became a partner with his son in the business known as H. C. Matthias and Son, later changed to the Waterloo Dredging Co. He was active in the business until his retirement in 1945.

He was born May 2, 1869, in Bremer County, the son of J. W. and Engel Matthaias. He married Sarah Wente March 3, 1892, at the Maxfield Lutheran Church in Bremer County. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.

They lived on a farm in Bremer County until moving to Waterloo in 1909. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife; a son, E. H. Matthias, 124 Clyde Circle; three daughters, Mrs. Bertha Volker, 113 Berkshire Rd., Mrs. Emma Brandt, Marshfield, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Hulda Radtke, Baltimore; a brother, W. C. Matthias, Orange, California; three sisters: Mrs. Mary Richmann and Mrs. Anna Griese, both of Readlyn, and Mrs. Clara Seegers, Sumner; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Prayer services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Parrott and Wood Funeral Home and funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. W. H. Becker officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Denver.
