[Waterloo Courier, Friday, March 29, 1901]

The death of Mrs. Wm. Chapple on Tuesday last cast a gloom over the entire city as scarcely anyone knew of her illness until the summons came of her death.

Louisa Mitchell was born at Bloomington, Indiana, Feb. 18, 1840*. A few years later with her parents she came west locating at Chariton, Iowa.

At the age of 16 she united with the M. E. church. She received a good education in the common schools and graduated at the Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Seminary in 1860. During the year 1859 she took an active part in the Lincoln campaign as a member of a glee club.

She was married to William Chapple at Chariton, Iowa, October 1, 1866, and made her bridal tour from that place to LaPorte City overland, since which time the parties have lived in this city.

Five children were born to this union: Joseph Mitchell, Lulu, William Henry, John C. and Bennett.

The daughter, Lulu, died October 5, 1873, and the four boys survive.

The subject of this obituary was a member of the Elizabeth Ross Chapter, Daughters of the Revolution and was descended from Colonel Joseph Crockett, one of General Washington's aides, who was a relative and near neighbor to Thomas Jefferson in Albemarie County, Virginia. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Woman's Relief Corps, and was nominally the editor of the LaPorte City Press while the same was under the Chapple management.

The surviving members of the Mitchell family are Rev, Bennett Mitchell, Kingsley, Iowa, and Mrs. N. J. Moore, Chariton, Iowa.

Mrs. Chapple made two trips to Europe, one in 1882 and the other in 1900. It was through her inspiration, counsel and advice that her boys all took to and engaged in newspaper work. She was a woman of rare musical and literary talent and in an early day she taught music in this city and there are quite a number here yet who received their first musical instruction from her. There is probably not within the confines of the state a family more devoted to each other than were the Chapples. That love springs eternal in human breast always abounded in the husband and wife, father and mother, and the children were always filled with love to their parents. No move or enterprise was ever thought seriously without first consulting father and mother and since we come to a realization of the fast that the children are all on the highway of fame and prosperity we cannot help but also realize that the deceased has Mr. Chapple, the surviving husband will have the heartfelt sympathy of all our people in his bereavement.

The funeral took place at 2 p.m. from the M. E. Church, after a brief service at the house, Rev. D. S. Staebler officiating and the services were largely attended by neighbors and friends. harry Chapple of Waterloo, Mrs. N. J. Moore of Chariton and the surviving children. Joseph M. Chapple and wife and Bennett Chapple of Boston, Mass., and William H. and John C. Chapple and wife of Ashland, Wis., were present.
