Escaped Nazi Camp, Dies Mowing

A former Waterloo resident, who survived to escape a German prison camp during World War II, died of a heart attack while mowing his lawn at 9:30 p. m. Tuesday.

He was Vernon Richard (Dick) Rausch, 44, now of Bozeman, Mont. A memorial service for him will be conducted at Bozeman and a graveside service Saturday at Fargo, N.D.

Mr. Rausch was born at Waverly, Iowa, March 12, 1923, to Mr. and Mrs. Vern Rausch and was a resident of Black Hawk County until 1940, when he left to reside in North Dakota and later in Montana.

He had been employed here as a mechanic for Morris Motors and recently had been a salesman for a Cadillac - Oldsmobile firm in Bozeman.

He served as a staff sergeant during World War II with the Army overseas and escaped after three months of internment in Germany. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Lodge of Fargo.

His marriage to Gladys Geiske occurred at Nashua on January 8, 1943.

Preceded in death by a son,

Mr. Rausch is survived by his parents, now of Rt. 4, Waterloo; his widow and a son. Thomas, both of Bozeman; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Boyle of San Francisco, Calif.; one granddaughter; two brothers: Burdette of 3510 Dallas Drive, Cedar Falls, and Kenneth of Hudson; and a sister. Mrs. Floyd Matejka of 2113 Hawthorne St.
