[Iowa State Reporter, Wednesday, September 16, 1874, Waterloo, Iowa]

OBITUARY—John J. Keller, whose parents, brothers and sisters reside in this city, died on the 5th last, and was brought here from the north for interment.

He was an engineer on the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad; was severely injured by jumping from his locomotive when he saw that another engine, out of time, was likely to make collision with his; and after lingering and suffering over three months, died, in the 31st year of his age.

Mr. K. was trusted largely by his employers, and being on his own running time, was not considered responsible for the accident which cost him his life. He had traveled much in this country, in the line of his calling; was generous and kindhearted, and always had plenty of friends.

The funeral services took place at the residence of his parents, in Waterloo, Rev. Mr. Austin being called to officiate, on Tuesday, the 8th.
