Mrs. Madeline Kurtz, 75, Janesville, passed away Thursday afternoon, September 27, at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, where she had been a patient since June 2.

Madeline Chevalier was born on March 25, 1898, in Waterloo, the daughter of Ernest and Johanna (Baumgartner) Chevalier. She attended school at the St. Mary's Catholic School in Waterloo. On May 28, 1919, she was married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waterloo to Henry Kurtz. They lived on Denver Street in Waterloo for a short time and then moved to a farm north of Waterloo where they lived until 1947 when they bought a home and restaurant-filling station business in Janesville. In 1951 they started the Riviera Ballroom and Bowling Alley in which she has been active until her recent illness. Mrs. Kurtz was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1966, and by an infant son, Harold. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Woore of Waterloo, and Mrs. Galen (Janice) Wilson of Janesville, and by six sons, James of Cedar Rapids, Delbert and Richard, both of Waterloo, Paul of Denver, Iowa, Arnold and David, both of Janesville, and Robert Ortner of New Orleans, a nephew she raised. Also by three sisters, Mrs. Josephine Plummer and Mrs. Milton Horak, both of Waterloo and Mrs. Florence Mulvaney of Oji, California and a brother, Leonard Chevalier of Waterloo and by 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Burial is in Mr. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa.
