SCHMIT, LIES, LUTGEN, WOODYARD, BORWIG, WEBER, MCLOUGHLIN

GILBERTVILLE — Services for Louis M. Schmit, 73, of 721 10th Avenue, will be 10:30a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, with burial in the church cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Nugent Demuth Post 714 of Gilbertville.

He died Friday night July 3, 1987, at home of cancer.

He was born Feb. 9, 1914 in Gilbertville, son of Jacob and Mary Lies Schmit. He married Hilda Lutgen June 28,1949, in Gilbertville.

He served in the Army in the Normandy Invasion during World War II. He was employed for 22 years in the meat packing department at Rath Packing Co., retiring in 1976.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, H.M.C. Dennis Schmit with the Navy in Havelock, N.C., and Scott of Waterloo; three daughters: Becky Woodyard and Mary Borwig, both of Waterloo, and Lois Weber of Evansdale; eight grandchildren; a brother, Robert Schmit Sr. of Gilbertville; and a half-sister, Ann McLoughlin of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Matthias Lies, LeRoy Lies and William Schmit.

Friends may call at Oppold Funeral Home from 4 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, wherethere will be rosaries at 7:30 p.m. today and 3 and 7 p.m. Monday and a scripture service at 8 p.m. Monday, and for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be given to I.C. St. Joseph's School, Raymond; Cedar Valley Hospice; or Shriner Crippled Children's Hospital.
