CEDAR FALLS—Barbara A. Bender, 74, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, Nov 14, 2004, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.

She was born March 27, 1930, in Pontiac, Mich., daughter of Richard G. and Isabelle A. Snyder Bashore. She married Gerald N. Shirley in 1952, and they were later divorced. She married Robert E. Bender on April 18,1969, in Las Vegas. He died Dec. 26,1999.

Mrs. Bender was a graduate of Michigan State University receiving a bachelor's and master's degree in English and fine arts, and was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. She taught school in the Waterloo system for many years, at Orange, Bunger and Hoover schools. She was a member of Cedar Falls AMVETS Auxiliary Post 49.

Survivors include two sons, Rick R. (Sue) Shirley of Waterloo and Mark G. (Joanie) Shirley of Parkersburg; a daughter, Kim Ann Ortiz of La Porte City; three stepsons, R.E. Bender of Colorado, Paul T. Bender of California and Mike E. Bender of Florida; a step-daughter, Noel T. Mattison of Colorado; seven grandchildren: Elizabeth Ortiz and Kristen Whitson, both of La Porte City, Rick Whitson of Riverside, Calif., Sarah Ann and Kathryn Elizabeth Shirley, both of Waterloo, and Jenna Mae and Thomas Norman Shirley, both of Parkersburg; four great-grand-children and five stepgrandchildren.

Memorial services: 4 p.m. Saturday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway. There will be no visitation.
