Helen Groothuis, 92, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

She was born May 27, 1916 in Dumont, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Edith (Ufford) Brown. At the age of seven days, her mother passed away and she was adopted into her Aunt and Uncle’s home, Mabel and Dave Wilkinson, near Bristow, Iowa, where she attended school and grew into womanhood.

Helen married Herman Groothuis on March 12, 1937 in Bristow. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1959. Helen and her husband farmed near Dumont for a number of years. On July 23, 1934 at her home in Bristow, Helen trusted Christ as her own personal Savior by believing what God says in John 3:16. She lived in the joy of sins forgiven and peace with God, knowing heaven was her Home for all Eternity.

Survivors include a son, Glen (Marilyn) Groothuis, of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Lois (Steve) Lamb, of Grants Pass, Oregon; thirteen grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren; a half brother, Harold Brown, of New York City, New York, and a daughter-in-law, Peggy Groothuis, of Willmar, Minnesota.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and husband, a son, Ivan Groothuis, and a half brother, Harry Brown.

Services will be 10:30 am Thursday, April 30, 2009, at the Cedar Falls Gospel Hall, with a 3:00 pm burial at Hitesville Cemetery, Aplington, Iowa. Visitation will be 3—8:00 pm Wednesday, April 29, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before service at the Gospel Hall. Memorials may be directed to the family.
