WATERLOO — The Rev. Nicholas E. Schiel, S.J., 88, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at the San José Jesuit Community in El Progresso, Honduras.

He was born Dec. 26, 1924, in Waterloo, son of Louis and Lillian Schiel.

The Rev. Schiel graduated from Our Lady of Victory Academy, Waterloo, in 1942. After a semester at Creighton University, Omaha, he entered the Jesuit Society at St. Stanislaus Seminary, Florissant, Mo., and was ordained a priest June 16, 1955, in Milwaukee. He earned a Ph.D. in Spanish at St. Louis University in 1965, became head of the department of modern languages and taught Spanish at Creighton from 1962 to 1970. In 1970 the Rev. Schiel began almost 40 years as a missionary in Yoro and Olancho, Honduras. He spent time in retirement at St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, Wis., between 2003 and 2005, but then returned to Honduras for several more years of pastoral and retreat ministry.

Survived by: a sister Virginia Hill of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by four brothers: Francis, John, Joseph, and Fred; four sisters: Marcella Gerst, Viola Holbach, Agnes Nolan and Anna Fenelon; and a brother and six sisters in childhood.

Memorial Mass will take place in May at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Waterloo. He was buried in El Progresso.
