BACKEN, HOPPER, HEIPLE, MCLAUGHLIN LOHMANN, CARSON, OPPENNEER, WEBBER

Helen L. Backen, 67, of 106 E. Third St., died Wednesday, June 26, 1991 at Allen Memorial Hospital of heart failure.

She was born May 5, 1924, in Waterloo, daughter of Dewey and Mildred Heiple Hopper. She married George McLaughlin in May 1942 in Nashua. They were later divorced. She married James Backen in April 1965 in Minnesota. He died in December 1970.

Mrs. Backen was a waitress at the Elks Club for 10 years and worked at Falls Avenue Drug for five years, retiring in 1990.

Survivors include two sons, Gary McLaughlin of Johnathon, Minn., and Craig Backen of-Waterloo; three daughters, Sandy Lohmann and Cindy Carson, both of Waterloo, and Linda Oppenneer of San Padre Island, Texas; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother, John Hopper of Puyallup, Wash.; and a sister, Shirlee Webber of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Parrott & Wood Funeral Home with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or the family.
