Donnabelle A. Casey, 84, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.

She was born June 26, 1924 in Cedar Falls, the daughter of John and Ruth (Livingston) Casey. After graduating from Cedar Falls High School in 1942, Donnabelle attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and then entered the WW II Cadet Nurse Program, where she earned her Hospital Diploma in Nursing from Kahler Hospitals School of Nursing, Rochester, Minnesota, in 1946. She received her BS degree in Nursing from Marquette University, a Certificate in Occupational Therapy from the University of Southern California, and a MA degree in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing.

Donnabelle was a nurse at Sartori Memorial Hospital and later was a nurse in Florida, Maine and St. Louis. She worked with the California Elks Club for seven years, teaching parents of children with cerebral palsy new therapies for treatment of the disease. Donnabelle served in the US Navy Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War. During her service, she taught Nursing and served as Chairperson of the Dept. of Nursing at Palomar College, San Marcos, California. Donnabelle retired as a Captain from the US Navy in 1984. She held lifetime memberships in Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49, the Cedar Falls Historical Society, and the Naval Reserve Association.

Survivors include her sister, Marie Cook, of Cedar Falls; three nieces, six nephews, six grand nieces, four grand nephews, four great grand nieces and four great grand nephews. Donnabelle was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Arnett Iversen.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with inurnment at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. A rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, followed by a DAR service. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Falls Historical Society or the Cedar Falls Municipal Band.
