Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church for Mrs. Olaf Backen, 48, of 812 McCoy Road, Evansdale, who died at 12:10 a.m. Sunday at St. Francis Hospital. The Rev. Alvin P. Herring, pastor, will conduct the service.

She was born Catherine Gill in Waterloo on April 18, 1909*, the daughter of James E. and Kathryn Anna Craig Gill.

She attended East Waterloo schools. For many years she was employed at Rath Packing Company.
She was married May 20, 1926 in Waterloo to Olaf Backen. Mrs. Backen was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and of the Rosary Society of that parish.

Surviving are her husband, Olaf, one daughter, Mrs. Beverly Nagel, 200 Gilbert Dr, Evansdale; two sons, James, Route 4, Evansdale and Ronald of the United States Navy, Great Lake, Illinois; six grandchildren; her stepmother Mrs. Alice Gill, Decatur, Illinois; six sisters: Mrs. Nellie Broell, 713 Riehl Street; Mrs. Marjorie Hammer, Decatur; Mrs. Delores Butler, 1115 Black Hawk Road; Mrs. Betty Remitsch, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Eleanor Williams of Germany and Mrs. Marlene Bogus, Maquoketa; two brothers, John W. Maquoketa; Robert of 1115 Black Hawk Road.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

The Rosary will be recited at O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
