WATERLOO — Roy J. Potratz, 62, of Waterloo, died at home Friday, Feb. 8, 2013.

He was born July 14, 1950, in Oelwein, son of Carl and Alice Downing Potratz. He married Jean K. Guetzlaff on Sept. 27, 1975, at Trinity American Lutheran Church, Waterloo. She died July 6, 2009.

Mr. Potratz graduated from West Central High School, Maynard, in 1968, and in 1972 graduated from Upper Iowa University with a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics. He worked at John Deere in production control for a few years, then was a systems analyst, retiring after 37 years in 2009. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, and a former member of Trinity Lutheran, serving on the Worship and Music Committees and Nazareth Lutheran Church where he taught and played piano for Sunday School and taught confirmation classes.

Survived by two sons, Eric of Cedar Falls and Andrew (Allison) of Story City; a daughter, Laura Potratz of Paris, France; a grandson, Josiah Potratz; three brothers, Robert (Linda) and Russell (Glenda), both of Cedar Falls, and Ralph of Waterloo; and two sisters, Laurel Eickhoff of Kansas City, Mo., and Loyce (Ken) Oelrich of Fayette.

Preceded in death by a brother, Randy.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Friday at Ascension Lutheran Church, preceded by an hour of visitation. His body has been cremated, and inurnment will take place at a later date. Locke Funeral Home assisted the family.

Memorials in lieu of flowers, may be directed to the church or donor’s choice.
