Robert C. DeVoe, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Waterloo, to Eugene and Nellie Steeley DeVoe. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While in service he attended Milsaps College in Jackson, Miss., Kansas State Teachers in Pittsburgh and Rice Institute in Houston.

He married Juanita Johnson Sommer on June 19, 1948, in Waterloo. Robert graduated from Iowa State University in 1949 with an architectural degree. He worked with the Thorson & Thorson Architectural Firm and later started his own firm in Cedar Falls, where he worked until he retired.

Robert was a member of Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church and served as deacon and trustee. He also served with the American Institute of Architects, the Elks Club, the Lions Club, Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce, and the Arcturus Club. Robert was a president of the Cedar Falls Savings & Loan.

Robert was a pilot and belonged to the Waterloo Skyhawks Group. He flew members of the Washington Park Country Club over land north of Cedar Falls, looking for a good location for a new golf course. This land was developed into the Beaver Hills Golf & Country Club. Robert became a director of Beaver Hills Golf & Country Club. He loved to fly, play golf, and enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada.

Robert’s survivors include his wife, Juanita DeVoe; son John Robert DeVoe (Carmen) and daughter Jill Ann Bruess (Gerald), both of Cedar Falls, and two grandchildren, Chris and John Bruess of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Audrey Field. He will be greatly missed by his family.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church or Western Home Communities.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls. Family will receive friends and relatives one hour before the service. Inurnment will be held privately at a later date. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, 266-7525.
