LA PORTE CITY — George P. Pfeifer, 83, of La Porte City, died at home Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, after a long illness with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born Oct. 5, 1929, in La Porte City, son of George V. and Anna Wieting Pfeifer. He married Lois Jelinek on June 27, 1964, in Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Pfeifer worked at Rath Packing Co. for more than 30 years until they closed and farmed his entire life. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict.

Survived by his wife; a son, Tim of La Porte City; a daughter, Julie (Steve) Van Brocklin of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Dane, Camden and Ellie VanBrocklin; a brother, Robert (Karine) of Park Rapids, Minn.; a sister, Genevieve (Gerald) Rhodes of Leesburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Hansen.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Eagle Center, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by La Porte City American Legion USS San Diego Post 207 and VFW Post 3983. Visitation (casket will be closed) from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at La Porte City Funeral Service, with a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation also an hour before services Monday at the church.
