Funeral services for Sylvester Saffold, 51, of 504 Ankeny St., will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Robinson, pastor of the Rose Hill Church of God in Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Monday at O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home.

Mr. Saffold died at St. Francis Hospital at 8:45 p.m. Friday of cancer.

Mr. Saffold was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Holmes County, Miss., the son of Cleven and Hattie Mae Saffold. He married Millie Russell Feb. 28, 1947, in Waterloo, and they were later divorced. He then married Patricia Waddell on May 18, 1957 at Preston, Minn.

Mr. Saffold was employed by the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 26 years and was a member of the Rose Hill Church of God in Christ, St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 35 and Local 838 United Auto Workers.

Survivors include his wife, six daughters: Debra, Tangela and Helen, all at home, Mrs. Barbara Culpepper of 206 Dane St., Mrs. Dorothy Studaway of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Adeline Church of Samford, Fla.; two stepsons; his father and stepmother of Winona, Miss.; seven brothers: Rebel of 2525 E. 4th St., Eddie of the Black Hawk County home., W.C. of Kansas City, Mo., Eugene of Durant, Miss., Richard of Winona, Miss., and James and Louis, both of Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Richardson and Mrs. Bertha Ola, both of Chicago; six grandchildren and four step grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother and two sisters.

St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 35 will open at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday for the purpose of conducting rites for Mr. Saffold. The casket will not be open after the service.
