WATERLOO — Norma F. Harris, 81, of Waterloo, died at home Saturday, Jan. 19, of natural causes.

She was born April 28, 1931, in Malcolm, Poweshiek County, daughter of Raymond and Florence Smith Wiley. She married Howard Harris on Aug. 22, 1956, at Free Methodist Church, Oskaloosa.

In 1974 Mrs. Harris returned to college to earn her teaching degree, then began to substitute for the Waterloo School System. She became a full-time teacher at Longfellow Elementary from 1983 to 1996, when she retired. She also was a seamstress, vocalist and artist of oil landscapes. She was a preacher’s wife in the Free Methodist Churches throughout Iowa, where she taught Sunday school, Bible school, Children’s World Missionary work, along with being a pianist and song leader.

Survived by her husband; a son, Joel (Linda) of Waterloo; a daughter, Julia (Steven) Baldwin of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, Caitlyn, Ian and Ainsley Harris, JaCynda and Zackary Baldwin, Chanisse McCrea, Ayron and Taylor Appleby; three great-grandsons; three brothers: Jack (Janet) Wiley of Olathe, Kan., Warren (Carolyn) Wiley of Grinnell and Clyde (Mary) Wiley of Newton; and two sisters, Joyce Rieman of Oskaloosa and Dorothy (Vernon) Strong of Oswego, Ill.

Preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Carolyn Wiley; a brother-in-law, Jack Harris; and a nephew, Michael Wiley.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Parrot and Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, followed by a time of fellowship at the social hall at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1301 Kimball Ave., with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

Please remember Norma as you knew her to be; a very nice lady, a great wife and mother, a grandma, great-grandma, sister, aunt, teacher and friend. She was always there to help, never looking for recognition.
