CEDAR FALLS — Dennis E. "Denny" Hansen, 78, of Glendale, Ariz., formerly of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Life Care Center, Glendale.
He was born on Jan. 8, 1935, in Cedar Falls, son of Ralph D. and Norma Nielsen Hansen. He married Marlene "Molly" on Sept. 21, 1974, in Galena, Ill.
Mr. Hansen graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1952, then worked as a telegraph operator for Illinois Central Railroad for two years. He started at John Deere in 1959 and advanced to the position of supervisor, taking early retirement in 1985. After retiring from Deere he completed a horticulture class at Hawkeye Institute of Technology, Waterloo. The couple moved to California where he held several horticulture-related positions for golf courses and the school system. After moving to Glendale in 1994 he worked for Arizona State University, El Dorado Retirement Community and the Peoria School District.
Survived by his wife; a sister, Marlys (Jerry) Rosscup; five daughters: Rita Neuman, Lynnette (Brent) Atwood, Tonya (Dan) Stapleton, April (Dennis) Mahar and Kasey McKeag; a son, Rock (Cherylyn) Schneider; nine grandchildren, Shannon Hansen, LaTina Combs, Kari Neuman, Keisha and Shawn Meeks, Kendra Hamilton, Kaelyn and Mitchell Mahar, and Jimmy McKeag; seven great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Chet) Main, Larry Niemeyer, Cleo (Matt) Matthew, Joann (Johnny) Nielsen, Dan (Marilyn) Niemeyer .
Celebration of Life: 2 p.m. Jan. 27, at Christ’s Community Church, 4530 W. Thunderbird Road, Glendale, AZ 85306, with a church reception following. Arrangements by Chapel of the Chimes, Glendale.
