[Waterloo Courier, Thursday, September 18, 1873, Waterloo, Iowa]

Ed Neary killed

Last week Ed Neary got drunk in the city, and was arrested by officer Hoff for disorderly conduct. While conducting him to the calaboose he drew a knife on the policeman, who sent him to grass instantly with his "billy." He then put the "darbies" on him and placed him in jail. The next day he was allowed to go home on an errand; he ran through the house, walked to Raymond, and took the cars for Lyons. Last Wednesday a dispatch came to Marshal Ellis saying that Neary, while lying drunk on the track about a mile from Lyons, had been run over by a train, cutting off both legs and an arm. He lived a few hours only, and with his life paid the forfeit of his vicious habits.
