[Waterloo Courier, Iowa, Wednesday, May 2, 1883]

Died, April 27, 1883, James Rugg, aged 68 years. Mr. Rugg came from Heath, Massachusetts, to Iowa in 1837 and after a residence of about seven years in and near the village of Waterloo, removed in 1863 to a tract of land in Grundy County twelve miles from this city, where he made a home for himself and family. The original tract, with later purchases, comprising in all 960 acres, with its fine groves, orchard, barns, and comfortable house constitutes one of the model farms in this region.

In consequence of failing heatlh he last summer disposed of his farm to two of his sons and in November returned to Waterloo. He bore a long and painful sickness with extraordinary patience and fortitude.

A wife, five sons and two daughters survive him. Mr. Rugg possessed in a remarkable degree, the qualities of industry, energy and integrity and has left behind him a good name.

The funeral services were conducted Sabbath afternoon at the Congregational church by Rev. Mr. Adams, assisted by Rev. Mr. Cross. The large number in attendance many of them from a distance, indicated the esteem in which he was held by those who knew him.
