WATERLOO — Merlin J. “Andy” Andera, 84, of Waterloo, died at home Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, of advanced age and cardiac disease.

He was born June 5, 1928, in Protivin, son of Charles and Bertha Wendl Andera. He married Patricia Rausch on Nov. 8, 1952, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Fort Atkinson.

Mr. Andera graduated from Holy Trinity School, Protivin, then graduated from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He was employed at Rath Packing Co. for 34 years as a corporate director of quality control. He then was employed with FDL Foods until 1989. In his retirement he was a greeter with Walmart for 17 years.

Survived by two sons, Mark (LuAnn) of Cedar Falls and Michael (Maureen) of Chandler, Ariz.; two daughters, Mary Kay (Jeff) Hiatt of Waterloo and Maureen (Charles Sr.) Nichols of Evansdale; six grandchildren, Katie (David) McCullough, Timothy Andera, Charles Jr. and Kira Nichols and Lauren and Emily Andera; and a great-granddaughter, Maggie McCullough.

Preceded in death by a brother, Vitalis; and a granddaughter, Kelly Marie Andera.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward Catholic Church. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation also an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the church.
