[Iowa State Reporter, Wednesday, October 29, 1879, Waterloo, Iowa]

Horatio Sage died, in the fifty-eighth year of his age, at 5 o'clock Monday morning, October 27, 1879, at his residence, in Bennington Township, one mile north of the Cedar Valley Farm. He moved with his family from Boone County, Ills., and cast his lot among us in March 1866, made himself a good home and proved a genial friend and obliging neighbor.

He was prostrated by the remorseless hand of paralysis March 1879, and the attacks have been repeated at intervals since. At times he would rally, and his recovery was hopeful until last May, when his attending physicians gave up all hope of his recovery. He exhibited no signs of alarm, but said quietly, "I am fully resigned to the will of my Maker," praying to be called home from his sufferings and pain, which he bore with Christian fortitude. For the last six months he has failed perceptibly, and particularly so the last month, dying by inches. His mind was flighty at times until his spirit took its final flight to the realms above, while his affectinoate wife, four children and loving friends stood watching and weeping by his pillow.

The deceased was a natural genius of mechanical turn of mind, a good citizen, neighbor and friend, urbane to all his fellow beings, of a loving, mild, tender and charitable disposition, with always a kind word and fatherly affection to his children and those around him.

He leaves a wife and five nearly grown up children (one of whom is in Dakota) and a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. We recommend them to the love and sympathy of their many friends.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, 28th, from his late residence, where a large audience assembled to pay their last respects to the memory of one who ws so well known and loved by all. Rev. D.E. Skinner, of the M.E. church, East Janesville, conducted the service in a very impressive manner, in which he commended the bereaved family and friends to God's tender mercy and love. A long procession of sympathizing friends followed the remains to Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo, where he was interred by the side of his mother and his little grandchild Gookins.
