GILBERTVILLE - Daniel Gene O'Connell, 79, of Gilbertville, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.
He was born Sept. 22, 1927, in Waterloo, son of George and Anna Kremer O'Connell. He married Margaret Wagner Oct. 29, 1949, in Gilbertville.
Mr. O'Connell was employed in farming until 1978. He then was employed as a machinist with John Deere, retiring in 1987. Mr. O'Connell served in the U.S. Army.
Survived by his wife; two sons, Daniel L. (Shirley) of Evansdale and Michael (Sara) of Overland Park, Kan.; six daughters, Cheryl (Doug) Huddleston, Margene O'Connell (Ned Caples) and Mary (George) Scully, all of Waterloo, Janet (Mike) Blad of Elk Run Heights, Nancy (Larry) Haskin of Evansdale and Barbara (Mark) Meier of Cedar Falls; 16 grandchildren, Stephanie Huddleston, Paul (Cari), Brenda, Patrick (Erin) O'Connell, Melissa (Mike) Timmer, Michelle and Nicole Reinard, Emily (Luke), Christopher Blad, Sarah (Travis) Atwood, Matthew Haskin, Daniel, Laura, Allison, Emma Meier and Michael O'Connell; three great-grandchildren, Ethan, Morgan O'Connell and Brycen Timmer; and a sister, Irene Gall of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Francis and Richard; and three sisters: Adelyn Lavenz, Imelda Maring and Mary Shirley.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Full military rites will be conducted at the grave. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, where there will be a eulogy at 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to Alzeimher's Association or American Cancer Society.
